Avoid comparing your progress to others’ progress
When you compare your progress with learning English to other people’s progress, the outcome is typically negative. For example, if you compare yourself to someone who is progressing more slowly than you, then you might feel happy for a short time because you think you’re doing well, but there’s a risk that you will start to make less effort now because you think you are “ahead of others”.
On the other hand, if you compare yourself to someone who is progressing more quickly, then the outcome is also likely to be negative because you will feel bad about your “lack of progress”, and might lose motivation by criticising yourself too harshly.
So as you can see, there are potentially negative outcomes associated with comparing your progress to other people’s progress. I say that the only person worth comparing yourself to, is your past self:
Are you doing better now than your past self? Great! Keep going!
Are you doing worse now than your past self? Great! Now you know that you need to work harder!
The more time and energy you can redirect from unproductive comparisons to productive work, the better!
Kind regards,
Dean Teacher :)
