What is your MBTI?
I was impressed and astounded when students from nearly all of my elementary school classes (elementary school!!!) asked me, “Teacher, what is your MBTI?” Here I was, 51 years old, and I am ashamed to say, that I didn’t KNOW! Or, I had taken the test, and I knew I had the results in my email inbox, but I hadn’t bothered to dedicate those 4 letters to memory (Who can be bothered remembering 4 letters, after all?:), nor to read about it in-depth to find out what those 4 letters signified. However, and this is number two,… my young 9 and 10 year-old students KNEW! Not only did they know THEIR MBTI, but that of their brothers and sisters, their parents, and their close friends! What’s more, they knew what each of the different letters meant in terms of the different personality types! I was AMAZED and blown away!!! So, for those of you who need more clueing in, as I did, let’s look at the MBTI and the 16 personality types a little bit more here.
According to Google and Chat GPT:
MBTI stands for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is a personality assessment tool that categorizes people into 16 personality types.
The scales on which the categories are based are:
Extroversion (E) – Introversion (I)
Sensing (S) – Intuition (N)
Thinking (T) – Feeling (F)
- Judging (J) – Perceiving (P)
Anyone interested in taking the free test (in English), the test that I used can be found here: https://personality.co/personality-test
So, what is YOUR MBTI?
In my case, I am ISFJ – the Defender. Below is a more in-depth look at each letter and what that means about you and me.
The following information was taken from the following website, with modifications and cuts for brevity. https://www.mbtionline.com/en-US/Articles/what-do-the-letters-in-the-myers-briggs-test-stand-for
The first letter in your MBTI personality type (also known as your first preference) is how you get your energy
Extroversion – E stands for Extroversion, and people who have this personality preference are energized by the outer world of people and things. They generally share their ideas verbally and “recharge” by being around other people.
Introversion – I stand for Introversion, and people with this personality preference are energized by their inner world. Introverts use their energy interacting with people and things and gain energy by spending time alone and in their heads. They usually prefer to go through all their ideas and then share them out loud. (This is definitely me!)
NOTE: Any one person is not completely extraverted or completely introverted, you actually use both preferences throughout your day. One just comes more naturally to you .
The second letter in your MBTI is how you learn
Sensing – S is for the Sensing preference. People who have the letter S in your MBTI type tend to process things in a step-by-step linear sequence and observe and remember specific information. They also tend to focus on the facts and what can be observed via their five senses.
Intuition – N is for the Intuition. People who have a preference for Intuition generally learn by seeing the big picture and themes, and thinking about how specific information is connected.
The third letter in your MBTI type is how you make decisions
Thinking – the letter T is for Thinking, and people who have this preference tend to make decisions based on pros and cons, and weighing logical consequences from an objective point of view.
Feeling – the letter F indicates someone who has a preference for Feeling, meaning that they make decisions based on how those decisions might affect other people involved.
Another Note: Just because you have a preference for Thinking or Feeling doesn’t mean you can’t see things from the other side. Again, it just means when you first consider making a decision, you’re going to use this preference FIRST and may or may not use the other preference.
The fourth letter in your MBTI personality type indicates how you organize your life
Judging – the letter J stands for Judging, and people who have a preference for judging are the list-makers and planners. They like to have a structure and schedule to their time and will generally space out projects so they get work done a bit at a time. (Definitely me again!)
Perceiving – the letter P stands for Perceiving, and people with this preference are the ones who want flexibility in their lives and in how their time is managed. They would rather be open to new opportunities for events and like making decisions on the fly, and can sometimes enjoy working on things at the last minute or on their own schedule.

My comments… As the author of the above portion noted, these traits are measured on a scale, and no one is 100% A or B 100% of the time, and our personality will also change over time throughout our life span! But these are interesting and useful tools, for getting to know ourselves and our close friends and family better, perhaps. I think the important take-away is that we are all unique beings, and I hope we will all come to see and appreciate each other’s unique nature, which is what brings true beauty to this world and to this existence.
